Overview
From 18th November 2025, major changes are coming to how company directors and people with significant control (PSCs) are identified by Companies House. This is part of the wider reforms under the Economic Crime and Corporate Transparency Act, which aim to clamp down on fraud, money laundering, and the misuse of UK companies.

What’s Changing?
Until now, Companies House has taken a light-touch approach to verifying identities. That will no longer be the case. Going forward:
-
All company directors and PSCs must complete a formal identity verification process.
-
The checks will be carried out to a high level of assurance, similar to ID checks used by banks and regulated institutions.
-
This applies to both new appointments and existing directors/PSCs.
Why the Change?
These reforms are designed to make the UK business register more trustworthy and transparent. By ensuring everyone connected to a company can be identified and verified, Companies House is aiming to:
-
Reduce the risk of companies being used for fraud or money laundering.
-
Give customers, suppliers, and stakeholders greater confidence in the accuracy of company records.
-
Improve the UK’s standing as a safe and reliable place to do business.
How Will ID Verification Work?
There are two main ways individuals can complete the new checks:
-
Direct with Companies House – using their new digital identity verification service.
-
Through an Authorised Corporate Service Provider (ACSP) – such as accountants or other regulated firms who are registered to carry out verification on behalf of Companies House.
As an ACSP, we at Sutherland Black can handle this process for you. That means we can carry out the necessary checks quickly, securely, and with minimal hassle for you and your business.
What Do You Need to Do Now?
-
Existing directors and PSCs: You will need to ensure your identity is verified by the deadline.
-
New directors or PSCs: From 18th November onwards, you won’t be able to take up your role until the ID check is completed.
Failure to comply could cause serious problems, including delays in company filings and potential penalties.
